Periodic inspection of IBCs

BVT carries out initial and periodic inspections of IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) in order to approve them in accordance with Chapters 4.1.2.2, 6.5.4.2 and 6.5.4.4 of the ADR and thus to allow their use. Our experts carry out tests in the laboratory or on site.

Intermediate Bulk Containers

Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) are packaging whose main use is the transport of liquid or solid dangerous goods and which are widely used in the TDG sector, particularly for their safety and large-volume storage properties. In the field of dangerous goods, they are used in particular to transport chemical solutions such as paints, detergents, etc., or even powdered products. IBCs are made of metal, rigid plastic or composite with plastic inner containers.

If a company wishes to become autonomous in its control of IBCs, it must obtain an authorisation from the Ministry of Transport, valid for 3 years.

The cycle of

IBC control

All metal, rigid plastic and composite IBCs must be inspected and tested before being put into service and then at regular intervals not exceeding two and a half years. BVT is approved by the Ministry responsible for the transport of dangerous goods to carry out inspections and tests (air-tightness) on all types of IBCs. Our experts are available to intervene on site.

If an industrial establishment (IBC manufacturer, user, repairer, rebuilder or lessor) wishes to carry out the periodic tests and inspections itself, BVT is also approved by the Ministry responsible for the transport of dangerous goods to assist you in this process.

Our experts visit the industrial sites concerned to carry out an initial inspection and then submit an application for authorisation to the Ministry responsible for the transport of dangerous goods (authorisation valid for 3 years), followed by periodic inspections to apply for the renewal of this authorisation.

Resistance to natural conditions

The IBC must be resistant to environmental conditions and not be damaged by these natural impacts. For instance, it must be resistant to extreme cold or the hottest sunlight

Resistance to internal pressure

The IBC must withstand the internal pressure experienced by the products and materials it contains.

Resistance to transport

The transport conditions and the shocks or possible falls during the journey must not exceed the strength of the IBC.

Resistance to substances

For instance, when transporting chemicals, IBCs must be able to withstand the contents.

Safety

The IBC must be lockable and must not open as a result of a fall or other risk incurred during transport.

Convenience

In order to be convenient, IBCs intended to be stacked on top of each other must be stackable.
